Different types of wood allow differing amounts of infrared radiation to pass. 
Pine, which the door may have been made of (or possibly pressboard) is the most
porous, whereas the harder woods (like ebony) are the most opaque.  This is all
a matter of degree, however.  My 4X5 pinhole camera is made of pine and I've
shot IR with it without a problem.
