I also use D-76 (full strength, 9 1/2 minutes at 18ºC/65ºF as the directions
indicate), and indicator stop bath, and have yet to get rolls that are
"Swiss Cheese" with pinholes. You brought up an interesting idea when you
mention reticulation. I was wondering if these people have the same fluid
temperatures all the way through, or if there might be some differences. I
remember once accidentally reticulating a roll of Tri-X 120 at the very end
of the process. I was doing the final wash, and while holding the reel in
my hand, decided that it was ridiculous to stand there running cold water
over my hands (I also had just come in from shoveling some snow earlier) and
getting a chill, so I turned on the warm water and let myself warm up for a
bit. It was only a matter of a half a minute or so, but when I hung the
film, I noticed the emulsion was really delicate and came off the base with
the slightest contact, then when dry it had a "frosted" appearance. Sure
enough, when put on the light table, I saw it was reticulated. I was
surprised it did that after all processing was done, but it did. Maybe it
could be that non D-76 users have a developer that is making the pinholes in
their special cases, or they have a final wash that has a big difference
from the temperatures they used for processing, stressing the emulsion. My
cold water is very close to my processing temperatures, but maybe they live
in an area that has hotter tap water. Just throwing out an idea that I
haven't seen mentioned before...
