Just give it a try ! Only the area around the sprocket holes and some 2
mm at the bottom of your image will get fogged. If you take photo
classes, you probably have access to a darkroom. Just print your pics
yourself - a little crop will cure the fogging problem. ;-)

Why not test it, when you shoot your next roll of HIE ? :-)) Sounds
quite strange though. If the photo-flo worked as an IR-blocker (????),
the camera probably wouldn't work. I once tried to cover the IR-LED of
my EOS-500 N with some black tape. The result was that the camera
thought the film wasn't loaded correctly an therefore didn't function.
On the other hand, if the photo-flo didn't block IR, you would still get
fogging...
