How refreshing; I agree, Peter! Not a popular viewpoint, but mine, too,
nevertheless. In fact, if I get to go to grad school after I finish my
undergrad degree this May one of the areas I want to explore
photographically and research-wise is my belief that knowledge of correct
design is innate--some are more aware of it than others but I do believe
there are absolutes in compositional design that "feel" right to us as
humans because they mimick what we see in nature which also mimicks the
divine attributes of God (Romans 1). This can also be why certain
compositional arrangements that are a bit "off kilter" are interesting, too,
because they are unresolved, having an edge. (e.g. a circle can be too
resolved, too perfect, to hold interest, or a composition with central
emphasis can be too balanced to hold interest.) Anyway, even though these
thoughts do apply here photographically, you can certainly email me off
list, too. And, of course, I am well aware that to suggest such a theory as
"absolute compositional truth" would NOT be popular in grad school! But
heck, I've always bucked the mainstream anyway...
