  From disecting (sp?) some old releases
it appear that the moving part is just
a tightly coiled spring that moves inside
another tightly coiled spring (hench the
zzzz noise they make :)

  If this is true for modern ones then
maybe your inner spring got stretched so
that there are gaps between some of the
coils. This is bad since you now have
to compress these before the cable release
will exert any significant force.
