  Sam Smith shared a non-transposing camera
design with us early members of this list.
I still have a copy of the gif and can put
it up on my web page is Sam okays it.

  But basically the film formed a tall hump
between the lenses and two mirrors reflected
the images onto the sides of this hump. I
bet that's plenty confusing :)
