  Sounds interesting to me though I haven't tried
it.

  A pair of TLRs (w/ closeup lenses mounted) might
work pretty good if you didn't want 1:1 and made
a prong type focusing. The boxey nature of most
TLRs might make construction easy(ier?)

  A pair of these almost sold out Lubitels and
two +3 diopter CU lenses (achromats if you want
best quality) would give you about a 1 foot distance
to subject.
