I had thought the same thing at first, but how about just pulling off
1/3-inch of (3/4-inch wide tape) at a time.  3/4-inch by 1/3-inch strips
would be large enough to tack the mount closed with say, five pieces - two
on the sides and one in the middle?

I'd be willing to work with it that way for the benefit of having a clean
look and archival adhesives.
