DVD will replace CD-ROM in the relatively near future, so as soon as 
prices are reasonable it will be a better choice. I'd guess another 6 
months so far as writers are concerned. 

Anyone handling even reasonable numbers of images will appreciate the 
advantage of the higher capacity, as well as faster read/write times.
