I have worked on a technique for doing long orthographic images with a
video camera. See

information.  

We presented this technique at Siggraph '97 and continued to take it a
little further until funding ran out.  The pages were not updated after our
last effort, so some improvements have been made.  We were using a method
similar to the slit camera, except taking the center chunk of video and
using it to eliminate motion in the vertical direction (due to road bumps).
 We were aiming at extracting additional information from the video to fill
in behind obstructed objects and create a multi-plane (different depths)
image.
