According to the current internet poll, currently 40%
of the panoramic photographers are now shooting with a
digital camera and stitching the images. I predict
that by years end it will be over half. One big reason
is that with digital photography there is no film,
processing, or scanning to mess with. The only
materials cost is 20 cents for a blank CD-R to deliver
the images to the customer, assuming that the
photographer uses rechargable batteries in the camera.
Of course you can always email the image to them. :-)

What would have been a state of the art computer a
year ago (eMachine 600+) costs under $500 these days.
Professional stitching software is available free,
most top rated ones are sub $100. Three mega pixel
cameras are now sub $500. The most costly item that a
professional panoramic photographer will need to buy
is imaging software. PhotoShop is $600, however
PhotoShop LE is all that you really need $100, and
IMHO PaintShop Pro is even more powerfull that the
full priced PhotoShop 6 and available for under $100.

Assuming that if you are reading this message you
already own a computer, To set yourself up as a state
of the art panoramic photographer today would cost you
under $500 total.
