Do you know the guide number of a #5 bulb? The most powerful
grip flash (aka potato masher) that I know of is the Metz 60CT1
thru 4. It has a GN of 60 metres or 196 feet. That means that
with 100 speed film and f8 you can be 7.5 m or 24 feet away
from your subject. Not too bad. If you shoot Kodachrome 25
divide the distances by two to get the range.

The Metz 60CT4 also has a second, smaller, flash tube.
This lets you bounce the main flash off a ceiling or wall
and fill in shadows under the nose and put a sparkle in the
eye with the fill tube. Whether you will have enough flash
power to do this at small apertures depends on the height
of your ceiling, its brightness, and so on.

A local camera store has two 60CT4's in its used window
marked at $525 CDN each (plus 7% GST).
