Stephen, thanks for the order ;) and sorry if my response was not clear. For *minor* oxidation I use the "Mother's Mag" polishing compound (available in automotive stores) which does a good job in polishing most metals and also bakelite. I got the tip from Jon Golden. It's not a sercret and it has been mentioned and discussed in photo-3d in the past. 

For severe oxidation I first use a Dremel tool with a polishing tip to mechanically remove as much of the oxide as possible. 

Except for very bad situations, most contacts can be saved. Note that the contacts in some viewers (including most Realist red-buttons, but not the VM model D) are plated to reduce oxidation. Battery leak or rough cleaning will remove the plating. Constacts without plating still work fine but might need a bit more plating.

Good luck with your restoration work. Any one who can take apart the model D and put it back properly is very talented and should be congratulated!
