You are talking to the wrong audience.  The American language is filled
with abbreviations.  When I first heard "math" for mathematics, I was
shocked.  Then came gym, prep, photo, TV, phone,... I could list hundreds
of words that have been abbreviated and we use them every day.  Is this a
sign of lazyness?  When I once commented that in the Greek language words
are not abbreviated (we say "automobile" and not "auto", for instance), I 
got funny looks and ironic comments...  To make things even worse, there
are thousands of acronyms used mainly in science but also in everyday life
(RHS, CW, CCW, etc.)  I certain scientific/technical fields, if you are not
accustomed to these acronyms, it sounds like a foreign language... GAT
