Yup - You can see the same progression in computer graphics - the
name for an individual dot on the screen started off as "picture element"
(5 syllab) and was truncated to "pixel" (2 syllab) and now down to "pel"
(1 syllab) - which is itself an abbreviation ;=D
The current usage that drive me crazy is using "read" as a noun, rather
than as a verb - "It's a good read." This seems to be to be a very recent
usage. I never heard it until about 10 years ago. Of course similar
usage has been around for other words, such as "It's a nice drive."
I suppose when three dimensional Virtual Reality entertainment becomes
common, people will say "It's a good VR!".
Incidentally - for those of you wanting to return to longer digests,
I've slowly been lengthening them back out to see how close I can get
to the 30K limit that some mail readers seem to enforce, without going
over. So if they've been seeming a bit longer, it's not your imagination!
