Stereo-Realist Prints

I, too, am playing with my new/old Realist from George T. I have
done *only* prints as that is what I do with my twin rig. Getting prints
from the Realist has been a bit of trouble but I have a local lab that will
do its best without special masks. The problem is not so much overriding
the 8-perf default of the modern processors but the fact that metering is
done of the whole negative area. If you have a dense neg next to a light
one, you get an average of the pair. Make friends with the operator.
He/she will then align the frame with the one nearest in density on the left
or right and print that as the pair. On some occasions it will not be
possible to get a good print and you will have to consider finding a custom
place if the shot is important to you. Without a special mask, all it would
take would be a machine that would do spot metering of one 5-perf frame.

Mounting? It is a snap. I have a laptop or tabletop cutting board
(homemade) with a wood bar at the top for square alignment. I use an old
parallel expanding rule for horizontal cuts and 90-degree triangles for
vertical cuts. A small millimeter ruler for setting the stereo window and a
sharp blade complete the necessary hardware. I simply tape the pics
together on the back with Scotch tape. If I want to get fancy I mount them
to matte board but, as I scan many anyway, I like to be able to pull them
apart and reverse them when necessary.

The pics from the Realist usually take less cutting than from the
twin rig. However, I still do quite a bit of cropping as I mount and my
picture size is not at all standard. I have been using 4x6 size and it is
OK most of the time. Without a bit of cropping they can be at the edge of
viewability at times and I will probably experiment with 3x5 prints for
shots that need the full frame uncropped.

To see some stereo shots (though none from the Realist yet) check out:

and let me know what you think of them.
