I don't think there is one perfect way to organize slides that will work
for everyone.
My method has to be loose enough to allow for slides which I think of as
temporary, that I'm eventually going to discard. I want them to stay with
the set they are in, but I don't want to get rid of them yet (maybe
never). I also want to be able to locate a given slide by going through
the set (box) it is in. The way that works for me is to organize them in
Kodak slide boxes in date order with the date and description visible on
the end of the box. The boxes are then stored in a carton, in date order.
I have discovered that my mind is a much better "computer" than anything
else, so when I want to locate a slide, I look for the set I remember it
is in, and there it is. My mind also pretty much remembers what I have in
my collection, so if I want a slide of autumn leaves, I know to look for
it in the New Hampshire, 1995, set, and I know what is there and how good
they all are.
Sometimes I remove a group of slides from their sets and make up a box of
slides to show, from all different groups. I may keep that set around for
a while, but eventually I want every slide to be returned to its home
set.
