The five resolutions on Photo CD are relative to a base resolution for a
standard 35mm image with an aspect ratio (height to width) of 2:3. The
base resolution, designed for video preview uses 1.1mb. The following
table shows the five resolutions and their primary uses:

Resolution File Size Use
Base/16 73.7 kb Low res, monitor preview
Base/4 249.6kb Index print, thumbnails
Base 1.1mb Television preview
BaseX4 4.7mb HDTV display, prepress digial
                            (up to 3"x5" @ 150 Lpi.)
BaseX16 18.mb Film output, color copy, prepress
                            digital(up to 8"x10" @150 Lpi.

Catalyst is offering a scanning service for stereo slides still in their
original realist mounts, without cutting any corners (heh-heh). see
http://www.skypoint.com/~catalyst/stereoscopic.html#Services .

You can use a local service by re-mounting your slides in 2X2 mounts,
have them scanned for about $2 an image ($4 a pair, and them remount
them when you get them back,
OR you can send them to Catalyst and have it done for $3.50 a pair (plus
shipping, handeling, and media charge).

This service is aimed at scanning stereo transparencies for use with
electronic displays, including web pages. I have previously posted a
chart addressing the different 35mm stereo formats, aspect ratios, and
the scanning resolutions appropriate for image conversion to electronic
media and display. In the spirit of the recent discussions concerning
long postings and the perceived irrelevancy of electronic stereo
technologies, I will not repeat it here.
