Regarding the second question:  there's an image-processing program put out
by the National Institute of health called NIH Image.  I don't know if
there are versions for platforms other than Mac. It's free & can be
downloaded from most big software archives.  It incorporates a macro
programming  language, & I was able with very little work to convert one of
the macros that came with the program to make anaglyphs.  The catch is it
would only create 8-bit anaglyphs, which are visibly inferior to 24-bit.
