Yes the chips are left in the mount. VM, Realist, 2x2, anything can
be digitized in this manner without taking them out. Another advantage
is that they can be cropped. For example with the VM reels, if put right
up to the lens (macro), they occupy roughly 50% of the area. For more
magnification, one can put a 50mm lens (other simple lenses work as
well) in front of the camcorder and take it out of the macro setting
and use the zoom for further magnification. In this way the VM chips
can be magnified significantly. You can for example zoom into and fill
the video viewfinder from 20% (roughly) of the original VM chip.
Any light source that provides even illumination will work, including
light tables.

At my web site you can see an example of a "scan" from a Realist mount.
It is cropped from a 7p mount. There is some difference in exposure
between the left and right picture which was due to the automatic
nature of the exposure of the videocam but is still acceptable.
You can see the 3D stereo parallel pair at,

Another example of a digital conversion from one side of a VM reel(2D)
can be seen at,
         http://generation.net/~jacob/v-m.jpg
This one was originally converted to 1500x1125 but resampled to 500x448,
to take up less space on the web.
Finally you can see a 3D pic taken from a Star Trek reel. Cross-eyed.

And if you want to use the Snappy for taking 3D pics directly. Here is
an example of some 3D macro shots. It's an anaglyph 3D pic.

Gabriel, who should one day put all this stuff up as a web page!
