Review of Lenticular Pictures

A few weeks ago I was at the Eckards Drug Store and saw a Lenticular
camera by 3D Image Technology. The box said that the whole camera had
to be returned for the film inside to be processed and that they
didn't send back the camera. But for around $10 I had to try it
(it also cost another $16 to process the roll of 20). I also took
some 3D Realist shots of the same scenes to do a comparison.

Funny, I mailed both my Realist and 3D Image Tech. films on the same
day and by gosh they both came back on the same day approximately 10
days later. My Realist pictures were ruined because I had been in a
hurry and evidently had made the wrong settings. They were much too
dark to be of any use. The Realist is a fine camera (I have pictures
to prove it) but you have to take your time and do it right. The
cheapo 3D Image Tech camera didn't have many settings (it did have a
built-in flash which worked well on inside shots). The pictures that
came back from 3D Image Tech. were really pretty good. The pictures
were not near as sharp as my usual Realist slides. They didn't look
blured just a little grainy (not bad though). They were regular size
prints which seemed to have a thick plastic coating on top.
Lenticulars from 3D Image Tech. consist of 3 pictures transposed onto
one print with a funny covering. You don't need any viewers or
glasses to see them in 3D. It seemed some pictures looked more 3D
than other's. Pictures with something at 2 foot intervals (an object
every few feet for 20 feet or so) seemed to be best. In fact, a few
of my pictures were almost jumping off the prints ;-) But some
looked like there was only 2-3 depths. Something just got lost in the
translation. I may be wrong but it seems to me that Realist stereo
captures 3D more readily than Lenticular. Actually, I think you just
have to pay more attention to the scene with Lenticular. But when you
do get a good result,WOW! I am so impressed with Lenticular that
I'm going to buy a camera from 3D Image Technology.
Don't get me wrong, I'm keeping my Realist! I just want both!
It's a little like apples and oranges...both taste very different
but are equally as good.
My conclusion: Lenticular 3D will make a great addition to anyone's
3D camera collection. I highly recommend it!
