separation between chips

This is a very simple question, but the stakes are so high for me that I
wanted a wide feedback:
My x-rays of seashells show very indistinct near points & far points....the
surfaces are rounded and thin layers do not show distinctly in the
radiograph.  Most of the images do have a very distinct vertical axis.  I
am mounting the chips for projection onto a large screen, in a large
auditorium.  How far apart should I put the vertical axes?
