The question is not so simple and I don't think we can answer it
without knowing how is this vertical axis related to the rest of
the object...
I normally mount my slides so that the near point is close to the
stereo window, provided that the far point separation does not exceed
a maximum value. This rule makes sense in your case where there
is no physical infinity point in image. I would trust and optimize
the projected appearance rather than some quantitative measurement.
