A JPS file (Stereo JPEG) is a JPEG that contains a stereo pair. This stereo
pair can be laid out in a few different ways (side-by-side, interleaved,
over-under, anaglyph). Because there are a number of different stereo pair
layouts (as well as differentiating between whether the left or right field
comes first, etc) a JPS also includes whats called a Stereoscopic Descriptor.

The Descriptor is a short bit of information that is embedded in the header
of a stereo image file. A stereo image viewer will typically read this
Descriptor and from there will know how to read in the image pair. The
DepthCharge Viewer which i mentioned in a previous post works in this manner.

For those who are interested, I have written (with the input of key people
who are working with stereoscopic imaging on computers) a white paper that
fully describes the Stereoscopic Descriptor and how it pertains to JPS.
If anyone is interested in this document please send me an email and i'll
send you a copy (via email attachment). The document is more a technical
reference for someone wishing to implement stereo image reading or writing
in their programs than coffee table reading, but i'll send it to whoever
asks.
