Gary Schacker, you are a genius!!!  

Now, how come I did not think of that?  The way I have been doing it, I
have a short bar (24" I think) and I can slide the cameras in it, which
gives me a range of 6" (side-to-side) to about 24".  If I need less than 6"
I use one camera on a slide bar.  If I need more than 24" then I use one
camera and do the running back and forth thing.  I got some nice
hyperstereos of Athens this way with my 24 mm lens.  

Your method is simple and superior to the running back and forth thing:

It does eliminate movement and give better alignment.  I'll try it next

PS.  A note for Franz:  Don't worry about formulas.  Use the 1/30 rule as a
guideline (camera shift = Distance of closest object/30).  "Optimum" depth
is subjective anyway.  Experiment!
