P3D Re: VM & Kids

Regarding kids and if they can see 3-D, they definitely can. The
question was, can they see 3-D using the 65mm ocular spacing of
VM viewers. Since their eyes are much narrorer, it would be
difficult. Assuming they can actually see part of the image,
they would have to diverge their eyes to fuse the images. I
imagine their eyes are quite flexible at that age.
As George mentioned, one important factor is the age of the child.
My daughter was able to see the Magic-eye posters at age 3.
Therefore she could see stereoscopically at that age. As for
Viewmaster viewers, I never specifically asked her, but I knew she
hadn't till I saw her first reaction to viewing a 3Discover
cassette, at age 6. She was able to see these because the infinity
spacing is about 55mm and viewer oculars are adjustable, unlike the
VM 65mm infinity and fixed ocular separation. It wasn't till later
that she was able to make out VM images.
As for me, I don't remember the exact date, but it was around the
age of 7 or 8 that I got my first viewmaster and I do remember
that it was in 3-D!
In Ferwerda's book it mentions that the average interpupillary
separation is 65mm for a white adult male. The breakdown is,
Inter-
pupillary
separation
(mm) %
----------------------
<55 0.1
55-58 0.9
58-60 4
60-65 45
65-70 45
70-72 4
72-75 0.9
>75 0.1
As for children, it mentions that among children, 50% reach a
separation of 55mm by the age of 10.
