At least they'll know what you're talking about and not give
a glassy stare when you say that you need a 50 year old
battery-free "realist" camera. They probably think you just
recovered from your drugs seeing as how you're not using
surrealist cameras instead. While on the other hand, they
already know SLR's and probably already have one if
they're into photography at all.
Some folk (like you) may go from no-camera to 3D cameras, but
I think that the exception. I remember having a camera when
I was six years old (one of those cheap 2D tlr's) mumbly years
ago.

Only because they don't have any willing nude models..... :-)

I agree there. They want to check a box on the processing envelope
down at the store and have the results come back apparatus-free
viewable stereo. Doing nothing else different. :-)
