The SSA began operating in 1919 under the name Stereoscopic Society,
American Branch.  It underwent a name change, to better reflect its
operation, in 1990. It is composed of people who make their own
stereographs and exchange them, for viewing, in postal folios

Since its  beginning it has operated  these postal folios, which
circulate on a never ending route.  The method of operation is simplicity
in itself.  When a member receives a folio of stereo, slides or other
format they remove their old entry.  Then they look at and comment on all
the other stereographs, make an entry in the accompanying notebook if
desired (these notebooks are a wonderful source of Stereographic
Information and have proved to be invaluable over the years), put in a
new entry, fill out a voting/tracking card and mail it to the folio
secretary.  Then pack up the folio and mail it to the next person on the
list.

The SSA operates the following postal folio circuits; stereo cards,
"Realist size" stereo slides, 2x2x2 stereo slides , 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 Stereo
Slides and a Cyber Circuit.  Occasionally the question comes up "Why
doesn't the SSA have folios in the format I work in  - Lenticular,
Viewmaster, Viewmagic over and under"?  That is easily answered.  It is
known that there many stereo enthusiasts for these formats are in the
SSA, but to date no one has taken the initiative to volunteer to be a
folio secretary and assume the responsibility of organizing a folio in
any of these formats.  It is not a big task, I have been a folio
secretary for almost 20 years, but it does require a bit of time and a
lot of interest.  If you think you might like to organize a SSA folio,

The cost of annual SSA dues is only $10 (WHAT A BARGAIN) However
membership in NSA is a requirement for joining the SSA.  

If you have been considering joining the SSA, now is a good time. A SSA
Yearbook, which will contain 3 images of the member's choice, plus a
short BIO is being produced..  It will be furnished free , except for
postage, to those members who submit their materials for this historic
project.  This book will be produced in Black and White, but a later
version in color, which will be sold (price TBA) is also planned.   The
cutoff date for submission of stereographs (in the format of your choice)
is 31 May 99 . So join the SSA and become a part of this Historic
Project.
