P3D Pie Chart

I recently saw a pie chart of 98-1st quarter 1999
photography product sales breakdown. 35mm cameras represented approx 55%
of total sales.
camcorders at 25% . APS equipment 7-8% . Larger format equipment 4-5%
110 cameras 3-4% and finally digital cameras 2-3%.
I find that the average consumer inquires about digital cameras as an
alternative to prints made ( and costs from) film and processing. Once
they are educated about the costs involved to print digital images ( and
equipment involved) many realize that digital cameras are not feasable
for this purpose right now. Most folks I talk to want prints, and won't
use the digital camera for internet use, commerce etc. So I'd say the
costs must be reduced 50% before Joe Blo considers buying a digital
camera to replace film and processing costs. Many folks realize the time
involved to print ones own images and feel the 1 hour drop-off is still
the better time and money value. Mark Dottle
