My thoughts are that digital cameras have two potential
uses; as a replacement for the traditional print & film
cameras and as a way to do photography on your
computer or tv.

As a replacement for traditional photograpy, they are
not quite there yet. A few months back there was some
discussion of resolution in digital cameras and I asked
if someone could come up with a digital resolution
equivalent for a 35mm kodachrome slide, an acceptable
standard in most peoples' estimation. The answer was
5 megapixels. We are already at over 2 megapixels so
we could be at adequate resolution in just a few years'
time.

I think we are there now for computer and tv. Even a
1.3 megapixel camera which is getting pretty cheap nowadays
can fill an entire computer screen at reasonably high
resolution. Paired shots as JPS images are useful now
if they are taken from a hard disk or CD. Over the internet
they are a little big still, even with a high speed
modem. I envision a time when one's 3D photos, or regular
ones for that matter, will be transferred to a home-burn
DVD and shown on the TV. Maybe even in a changing
screen saver format operating passively in the background.
