There is no rule that says that correct stereo is done with
interaxial separation of 2 3/4 inches (or approximately equal
to interpupilary = separation of the eyes). Some of the most
stunning stereo pairs are taken with much larger or much
smaller separations.
Side-by-side twin SLR rigs are a great supplement to a standard
stereo camera. The standard stereo camera is a very convenient
tool but it has a fixed stereo base (interaxial distance) and
fixed focal length of lenses in most cases. Twin SLRs offer
variable stereo base, option to use lenses of different focal
lengths and all the extras (auto exposure, etc.) found in
modern cameras.
Using longer FL lenses (say 135mm) in combination with a wider
stereo base opens a wide range of possibilities, from tight
portraits to "zoo wildlife", to action stereo that looks like
you are much closer to the action.
It is definitely worth exploring twin SRLs, not as a
replacement but as a supplement of the standard stereo
camera.
