One way to help a bit has been mentioned, and that's to mount one
camera just behind the other so that the rear unit's lens "just" goes
by the side of the front one. Which goes in front has to do where
the controls are on the camera (and perhaps whether you're right
or left handed). This reduces the distance at the cost of a slight
mismatch, but this sort of setup is what one uses for a subject
that is relatively distant (as you would have figured out from your
slidebar work) so the size mismatch becomes minuscule
percentage-wise.
Like most any setup, you will have limitations which are different
from other setups. So whether it's for you depends if you like taking
photos within them. Also depends on your personal preference
regarding noticeable-hypers (the "toy stage effect"). Some folk aren't
bothered by it at all and actually like it, and for them, this is a superb
way to do things because it reduces the situational limitations of a
full-separation camera pair. I've been curious whether each person
perceives the same amount of "toy-effect" inasmuch it's a
brain-processing thing. Nor am I sure how one would tell. :-)
I first experimented with a pair of Pentax spotmatic family
cameras (with the behind arrangement). Very inexpensive way
to do it ( the screw mount lenses are both plentiful, often of good
optical quality, and inexpensive ). The bar I used wasn't very sturdy,
however, and they would wiggle around so that caused problems.
Needed to have made a better one. I still see mechanical dual
shutter releases from time to time -- saw one for a good price
at the Puyallup swapmeet a couple weekends ago. Electrical
fired newer cameras would be much much easier to handle,
just a tiny bit more money up front.
