[photo-3d] An alternative to twin SLRs

In my previous email I mentioned some of the advantages
of twin SLRs as a supplement to the standard stereo camera.
If you are traveling light and weight and/or space is a
problem, then consider a single SLR as a supplement to the
standard stereo camera.

I am mounting my slides from Greece and I was very pleased
by the few hand-held stereos that I took with my Pentax ZX-M.
The camera is lightweight and the bulit-in winder helps
when taking hand-held stereos (no need to take the eye
of the viewfinder).  The challenge is to find subjects
that do not move between exposures and use the single
SLR in situations where the stereo camera could not be
used.  I used the SLR in combination with a 28mm lens
in standard stereos and also in hyperstereos and in
hypostereos with the 28 or 50mm macro lenses.  

One example of this last application are stereos shot 
through glass displays.  You support the camera firmly 
on the glass so that slow shutter speeds (using existing 
light and small apertures for large depth of field) are 
not a problem.  Shoot the first picture, shift the camera 
by a small amount, shoot the second picture.  Wide angle 
lenses (28mm or wider) are usually preferred in these 
situations when the main subject is close to the glass and 
a wider field of view is desired.

The combination of a standard stereo camera, a small flash,
compact SLR (like the Pentax ZX-M), 28 and 50/macro lenses,
Bogen slide bar, compact tripod, and film, can cover a lot 
of ground and fits in a compact camera bag.
