I don't think Brian is saying (he can elaborate himself of course) that
you can't alter them for personal purposes but if they are altered and
then promoted publicely, then there could be problems.
The logic behind this is for example, let's say you bought a bunch
of stickers with a well known trade mark or Disney character (btw,
they are the experts on trademark protection, the RCMP had used
their expterise when they wanted to protect their RCMP logos, etc.)
You buy them and go home. You then start sticking them everywhere.
So far no problem. :-) Then you decide to stick them on cups, T-shirts,
etc. and start selling them on ebay, flea markets, heck even manage
to get a national distrbibuter! In all these examples you would be
infringing on the trademark or copyrights because you were not
licensed to distribute these items in this manner.
There are alot of subtle details in the above example, but basically
taking the trademark/copyright, so that it can be interpreted as it
is a licensed product is not allowed. Even if you go out of the way to
explicitely say it isn't, it is not normally allowed.
