I understand you're reasoning, but I'm not sure I would rule out
IR without at least doing some testing. Consider that if you put
the transmitter on the top of the projection screen pointing down
at the audience, you should have a clear line-of-sight shot at
everybody. As for narrow off-axis performance, my experience
(with an admittedly expensive pair of Sony's) has been that being
*way* off-axis has never been a problem. I'd be surprised if range
would be a problem either. For the size of audience I could
afford to buy headphones for, nobody is going to need to be very
far away from the screen! ^_^
