Just to add to the survey:  when I was using heat seals for large
quantity mounting, I positioned the chips using the trimmed RBT
method now in use with Spicer mounts (the method that Dr Dave
champions, but did not invent ;-) ).  I would tack each chip to the 
mount with a couple of quick touches with the tip of a miniature hot
glue gun, without  the glue stick inserted!  This would leave two tiny
impressions in the sprocket area of each chip, but it was extremely
fast.

Wasn't there a Realist mounting system that heat-tacked the chips
onto a mount in a similar fashion?
