You must be shooting some awfully bright night subjects to be able to use 
slow film and speeds of a 30th or faster.  Normally a tripod is the first 
requirement for effective night photography. The Realist has provision for a 
cable release. You must bracket widely.  More than one exposure can be 
considered a good one.  The right kind of meter can give you a good starting 
point.  The best type would be a spot meter. An ordinary reflective meter can 
work if you can get close to your subject matter.
