I guess that's my cue to speak up.
US Postal service in NYC is really bad. From personal experience, it
is not uncommon for birthday cards and the like to take a week or more
to go from the Bronx (where my Grandmother lives) to Queens. That's
intracity. I had warehouse rents check go "missing" three months in a
row (I actually suspect the warehouse staff of losing the checks,
either through neglect or to collect late fees), but when I switched
to sending rent checks via certified mail with return receipt the
receipts started to disappear.
Recently there was (yet another) scandal when a large number of people
complained that the IRS was charging them late fees for non-payment of
back taxes. It winds up that there were bags and bags of undelivered
tax forms (with April 15 postmarks) sitting in a corner of one of the
Post Office sorting facilities (in Brooklyn I think).
Having said all that I have sent originals (including one from my
honeymoon) to both Joel Alper's MF folio and the Paul Talbot's MF Expo
2000.
