What about some sort of rubber bumpers or rubber or plastic "padding"
that can be shaved down and then permanently attached to the "lower"
camera to make each one sit at equal heights.  With something like a
plastic shim, you could cut holes for battery and tripod access and then
attach the plate permanently to the bottom of the camera.

Just a thought.  Look forward to seeing the pics.
