Welcome to photo-3d, John. WE do sometimes omit some topics, but
when one comes that sparks interest,... do we ever get into it! ;)

You have already turned up a few stones.

Digital is a new thing for a lot of us, and it is costly.

Giving consideration to the optimum method for obtaining, processing,
and sharing images, my decision was to invest in the combination of
Realist produced transparencies, and a high quality digital camera.
Now, both cameras go on expeditions with me.

The slide copy adapter for the Nikon 990 camera just arrived
yesterday. Teaching, e-mail and family obligations have kept me from
experimenting beyond opening the box, but what I see looks inviting.

The adapter will receive the RBT mounted slides readily from either
direction side-to-side, therefore the Realist images can be mounted
before copying.

The light screen and holder rotates and locks in place, to bring the
image into the horizontal position, but it is necessary to devise a
track to elevate the image to the center of the shooting area. I
also plan to use one additional black half of an RBT mount to give
more pressure, when holding the slide in the adapter.

Daylight, or artificial illumination can be used, therefore some
effects can be produced by shifting the light source around.

A dual slide holder is included. This will work well for those who
use twinned film camera rigs.

And... a film holder for uncut strips is included. If we could only
get them to make one with adjustable openings, it would be really
handy for all of the typical 35mm films used in stereo photography. I
will probably remove the vertical partitioning bars, then use the RBT
slide as a mask for copying the uncut film.

I have been using the Bogen slide bar on a tripod, or "cha-cha" shots
for making digital 3d images, but the thought of twinning did occur
to me in one of my "less fiscally responsible" moments. Thank
goodness that I do not often act upon those ideas!

I did, however, think about the use of the remote control, that can
be obtained from Nikon for my camera, I called Nikon technical
services to find out whether or not it would be possible to get one
remote control to operate two of the cameras at once... This would be
the equivalent of producing an instant RBT type rig at about the same
cost as a film RBT camera... Sorry about that thought, Jon Golden,
but say maybe you will want to get that corner of the market. I am
retired :)

I pointed out the obvious for Nikon... two cameras would have to be
purchased, instead of one, and there would be an additional revenue
from the specialized remote. (One that would operate the camera
settings and the capture time of both cameras in tandem.)

At least, the suggestion was considered to be of some merit.

Others may re-issue comments on the hacking of other cameras to get
them to work together on the twinning rig, but my knowledge and skill
at fiddling with electronic devices is limited to finding out how to
work the things as they come from the package. That can be difficult
enough.

Once again, welcome and have a good time. Do you know Dick Wood of
the Alaskan Heritage Bookshop in Jeneau? Who else in Juneau do you
know who is interested in stereo photography? Thank goodness for
the Internet.
