I have experienced the same thing with the Hama illuminated 
film cutter.  What I did is install a simple rotary in-line 
switch in the power cord.  I cut a few chips and then turn 
the light off to prevent heating.  These switches cost only 
about $2 and take about 5 minutes to install.

Though I use mostly Spicer mounts with the RBT transfer 
technique now, A very handy trick for use with heat seal 
mounts is to securely tape a pin bar from an RBT mount to 
your film cutter at the right position so that you cut at the 
exact same width each time.  With this, the vertical alignment 
tabs on the heat seal mounts give constant infinity mounting 
every time.  This really speeds up mounting for average shots.
