I think there's more to it than that.  Even if you have a fixed
maximum you're willing to pay, and you stick with it, you'd probably
like to get the item for a lot less than that.  If you bid your
maximum early on in the auction, you're inviting others to come and
out-bid you.  By holding off until the end, you have a better chance
not only of getting the item, but of getting it at a lower price.
