I have not had any problems, but I guess I am not surprised that there
would be attempts at fraud and that Paypal would need to be aggressive
at trying to fight this. And it reminds me that I should be more
watchful on my bank and credit card statements than I usually am, so as
to detect a problem were it to occur. Too bad Paypal stepped on too many
customers' toes in trying to counteract the fraud problem. That seems to
be the gist of the article.
I have had more "problems" in terms of my credit card company (First
Bank) aggressively trying to counteract fraud and occasionally freezing
my account when there have been what they consider "suspicious"
transactions, such as several internet purchases on the same day. At
least the most recent time they did phone me and leave a message that
they needed to verify some transactions, rather than assuming I would
call when my credit card was declined (as they did on one previous
occasion). Most recently eBay was putting through a routine listing
charge on my account and somehow messed up the expiration date, so this
set off an alarm for a possible fraud situation where someone might be
"guessing" at exp #s to go with a stolen card #. When I spoke to the
customer service person at First Bank, she said that there is a lot of
fraud with internet transactions and Paypal so they are especially
watchful. All in all, I guess I am glad that they are being careful,
even if it is sometimes inconvenient. About a year ago, I did have a
problem where someone was using my credit card number out in California
(for several smallish purchases such as clothing at Sears,
interestingly) and the bank called me in Minnesota to verify that it
wasn't me. I am not sure what tipped them off, or how the person
obtained my cc number, but I incurred no liability for the fraudulant
purchases.
I still believe that there is as much or more risk using a credit card
"in person" as on the internet, if one is reasonably careful. And I do
find Paypal convenient and useful, especially for "person to person"
transactions such as on sell-3d or eBay. -Linda
