My experience with the "new" DepthCharge software on
Win2Kpro wasn't pleasant either. (And I posted my complaints
to this list at the end of January.) During the install there was a
warning about older components needing to be uninstalled,
which I ignored, so I shouldn't have expected everything to
work correctly.
To make a long story short, the new plug-in software worked
okay in Netscape but not MSIE 5.0 (at all). I soon uninstalled
the beta and went back to the 1.2 version, which I much
prefer. Perhaps due to this shuffle, viewing jps files in a
browser only works with Netscape on my system. I haven't
figured out how to get MSIE to use the stand alone viewer in
response to the image/x-jps MIME type. (Instead, MSIE
complains about not finding an active-x component; rather
typical brain-dead behavior, with user control needlessly
obfuscated.)
The old 1.2 viewer supports multiple instances (alt-tab
switching to different stereoviews), and pressing the tab key
while looking at a stereoview toggles the display of some useful
information. The 2.0 beta offers neither of these features and
has an intrusive "menu" bar at the bottom that doesn't seem to
add any functionality. (I thought this might allow different
views to be loaded and then selected for display, but it doesn't.)
I emailed VREX about these issues weeks ago, but never got a
reply or even an acknowledgement.

A .jps file is basically the same as a .jpg file, but may have
some extra header information. You should be able to rename
these extensions either way and view the images in regular
image viewing software or Depthcharge. I.e. you can take a
foo.jpg file, rename it foo.jps, and double-clicking will fire up
the Depthcharge viewer and show it. By convention, the right
chip image should be in the left half of the .jps image file. If
you're making .jps files by renaming .jpg files that you create,
you may want to turn off the progressive jpg feature. I'm not
sure if progressive jpgs cause trouble with the plug-in or not,
but better safe than sorry.
