I agree that Grant should consult a lawyer. There was a case recently,
where a valuable painting was accidentally included in a donation to a
thrift store and sold for a low price.

"A bench trial was conducted October 27 before state District Judge John
C. Brackley, who will issue a decision in the coming weeks regarding a
lawsuit filed by Claude Abel, of Boise, Idaho. Abel is suing to regain
possession of a painting worth up to $30,000 that a Sheridan man bought
for $25 from the Salvation Army. Claude Abel, filed a lawsuit against
Sheridan businessman Rick Kenyon, contending the painting by the famous
western artist Bill Gollings was accidentally placed in a box headed to
the salvation army two years ago. But Kenyon, who runs a consignment
business in Sheridan, says he purchased the Gollings work in good faith
and is not obligated to return it. Abel had been placed in charge of
settling the estate of the painting's owner, somehow, the painting ended
up in a box that salvation army crews picked up."

I have not seen the outcome of this case reported, but I'm sure a lawyer
could easily find it. Although the defendant is in Idaho, I believe the
case was filed in Wisconsin State District Court.
