You might want to try Vuescan <URL:http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html>.
It's meant for film scanners, but also works with flatbed scanners.
It supports many different scanners and works with MS Windows, Mac OS
and Linux/Intel.  Lots of people prefer it to the manufacturer's
software that came with their scanners.
