I use the 2.5V 0.83A halogen bulbs. I buy these
in large quantity from Reflectalite (John Goodman
gave the web page info earlier) and I improve them
in two ways:

1) Improve the "frosting" by retouching the bulb
with a diamond tip in a rotary tool. (Original
"frosting" is done by shot blasting and it is
a bit inconsistent or too thin some times.

2) Reduce the height at the top so that the bulb
fits better in the Realist red button and a few
   more viewers.

After doing #1 and #2, I can still sell the bulb for
less than the retail price asked from Reflectalite.

I do not remember when it was the last time I changed
bulb in my red button viewer. It must be longer than
two years ago, and I use this viewer all the time.

Perhaps this longer life is due to the fact that I
use the viewer with rechargeable batteries
which means lower peak voltage (compared to fresh
alkalines). According to one theory, improved
life in halogen bulbs is achieved if the bulbs are
used at their rated voltage (not lower). However,
every bulb will last longer if used at less than
the rated voltage.
