Hello Eric!
Have a look at DrT's Stereo Realist Page:
http://home.att.net/~drt-3d/toys/realist/index.htm
As the good doctor says: "The best deal in a stereo camera
today is the $100 Realist 3.5." For reference purposes,
I sell reconditioned Realists with warranty from $100 to $175.
About the film format, most all stereo cameras from the
1950s use the so-called "Realist format" which is 24x23mm
(the full-width fame is 24x36mm)
The film from this camera cannot be processed with most
automated equipment to mounted slides or prints. If you
use slide film, you will have to get it back uncut and
cut and mount it yourself or you can send it to Kodak and
a few other places to do stereo mounting. If you shoot
negative film, you will have to find a lab willing to
print this format.
I have to ask why a dedicated digital camera person
is interested in a Stereo Realist... Rory made a very
good point earlier: VIEWING! I have been saying this
for years... the weak link in stereo imaging is not the
taking of the stereo pair but the viewing of the stereo
pair. Film or digital, I don't care. How you view the
stereo pair is how you experience stereo. If you are using
the Realist to take pictures and then scan them to look at
them side-by-side or cross-eyed or anaglyph in a computer
screen, then you are missing the MAGIC that made STEREO
and the REALIST a success 50 years ago. Shoot slide film
and get a good viewer. This magical experience will
convince you that stereo as was done 50 years ago does
not belong to museums but to the hands of everyone who
enjoys stereoscopic imaging.
