I think John has hit upon the what seems to me the
essence of beauty in stereo pictures. And I’d say
this strangeness ought to be cultivated, not gotten
used to. It is the feeling of space frozen in time.
Something is lost, I believe, when the main interest
of a stereo picture is an object, not space itself.
As for sculpture and architecture, space, of course,
is a primary component. Unfortunately, if one has the
freedom to inspect this space in detail by moving
around or through it, much of the magic it was
intended to evoke is often dissipated. By stopping
motion, in this case by blocking access of the viewer
to all but a carefully selected block of space, a
stereo picture can actually enhance spatial effects in
ways not envisioned by the sculptor or architect.
Furthermore, it is not necessary to stop motion in its
tracks. A landscape, scenic or still life suitably
composed with stereoscopic effect in mind can exhibit
strangeness I’m speaking of: a form of beauty that can
be captured only in stereo pictures.
