I think I have an old FED at least it was one of the first I saw offered
for sale in the UK and its a 2.8 so it probably uses the dreaded mercury
cells but it seems as if they last longer. The cell is large and the first
time I had to replace once I had a problem at a Boots chemist (Drugstore)
finding one among the camera cells . The assistant finaly found a source at
another store in the chain or there own supplier but they did not have
many. I was considering buying up the lot while I could when another
assistant realised the cell was the same as used in the Braun Independant
portable hair curling tongs, presumably to ignite the little gas flame, so
I had one of those . The next time I just got one off the rack of Braun
spares in a blister pack at my local Boots. Last September I thought it
had run down while on a ferry to Norway ,I could not get one on board and
was not very hopefull of finding one in Norway . As I was traveling with a
party of mostly female students I thought I should be able to find one with
her Braun Independant tongs with her and beg borrow or steal a cell. But it
turned out that the last time I had had the base of the camera I had put
the cell back upside down and this seems to stop it working unlike a Nimslo
where at least you get a B setting when you this. If they contain mercury I
suppose these cells should disapear altogether eventualy but we seem to be
a little behind America in the UK on enviromental issues as well. P.J.Homer
